The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, lost the Plateau North Senatorial District now held by Simon Mwadkwon, the Senate Minority Leader, and the Bassa North House of Representatives seat currently held by Musa Avia before the Court of Appeal in Abuja over the weekend.
The three-member panel chaired by Justice Daudu Williams delivered the verdict nullifying Mwadkwon’s win, blaming the PDP for the defeat on its failure to comply with court directions to hold fresh congresses in 12 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Plateau State.
In 2020, the Plateau State High Court ordered the PDP to have a congress before making any nominees.
As a result, the Appeal Court Justices ruled that Senator Mwadkwon’s nomination by the PDP was invalid.
As a result, the commission ordered a new election for the Plateau North Senatorial seat to be held within 90 days.
