Former Manchester United player Paul Scholes questioned Raphael Varane’s lack of speed after their 4-3 Champions League defeat against FC Copenhagen on Wednesday.
Varane has only made one Premier League start since suffering an injury at the end of August.
United manager Erik ten Hag prefers Harry Maguire and Jonny Evans over the 30-year-old.
Although Maguire and Evans began again, Varane came on sooner than intended since Evans was forced off due to injury.
“Slightly [surprised by the selection], especially because he brought Varane into the team – Jonny was a free transfer,” Scholes was quoted as saying on TNT Sports.
“I think whichever centre-back he plays has to play counter-attacking football because none of them are attacking That fast.
“Varane was quick, but is he losing his legs a little bit now?” They must rely on that speed to some extent.”
