Nigerian pensioners protested on Thursday that they were left out of the newly formed National Minimum Wage Tripartite Committee.
The Nigerian Union of Pensioners (NUP), which is made up of retirees, vowed to stage a nude demonstration to demonstrate to the people of Nigeria how insane they have become due to starvation.
They mentioned that the hardships and high expense of life in the nation had caused no less than 1,500 of their members to pass away recently.
In a prepared text that he presented to reporters on Thursday in Abuja, NUP President Godwin Abumisi threatened to lead a demonstration by senior citizens if the federal government did not include pensioners in the Minimum Wage Tripartite Committee.

They also bemoaned the fact that some of their members, particularly in Enugu State, only receive N450 per month in pension.
He responded, “Let me say this, we have casualties every day,” to concerns about whether the union has experienced any casualties as a result of the hardships in the nation. Nigerian elderly are planning a nude demonstration; please write this down so that the world is aware of it. If they’d want, feel free to arrest us and ask why we went nude. Are you crazy? And we’ll declare, “We’re crazy.” We are now in a position where we can declare that we are insane.

The NUP welcomed this development and expressed great optimism that they would be represented on this powerful committee to provide their perspective to the negotiations and advocate on behalf of their members, keeping in mind that pensioners are retired workers who shop at the same market for everyday necessities.
Furthermore, we believe that the pensioners’ union need to be included in discussions on issues that are important to their members. Our hopes of having a representative in the Committee were unfortunately and regretfully shattered when the NUP’s name was noticeably removed from the membership list.
