Nigerian Army Sends 157 Troops on Peacekeeping Mission to South Sudan

He pleaded with the contingent to refrain from actions that could damage Nigeria’s reputation, such as sexual abuse and exploitation.

157 Army soldiers who have been sent to Abyei, South Sudan, for a peacekeeping assignment received their final training on Wednesday from the Martin Luther Agwai International Leadership and Peacekeeping Center.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the United Nations Interim Security Force in Abyei (NIGCOY 2) is primarily composed of soldiers from Nigerian Company 2.

At the soldiers’ pre-deployment graduation ceremony, Army Headquarters Chief of Operations Maj.-Gen. Boniface Sinjen gave a speech.

As part of its contributions to international peace and security, Sinjen said the event showed the dedication and ability of the Nigerian Armed Forces to send out high-caliber peacekeepers.
He claims that the security and stability of Africa, with a focus on the West African subregion, continue to be the main objectives of Nigeria’s national defense policy.

According to him, Nigeria is still actively contributing to and taking part in international peace support operations in an effort to promote world peace and security.

In light of this, Singen stated that Nigeria has sent out over 100,000 peacekeepers since its first deployment and had successfully engaged in over 40 peacekeeping operations.

“All Nigerian peacekeepers, along with those from all across the world, have contributed to the advancement of humanity by assisting troubled nations in reestablishing peace and enthroning much-needed development.

After Abyei was demilitarized and turned into an administrative town under UN supervision in June 2011, the UNISFA was founded to bring peace and stability back to the region.

Mainly, the purpose is to safeguard people who are in immediate danger of bodily harm, keep the area safe from unauthorized entry, and maintain security.

“The troops’ professional conduct has contributed to the mission’s success in restoring peace and stability in Abyei,” the speaker stated.

He advised the group to avoid behaviors like sexual abuse and exploitation.

He forewarned them not to become involved in the trafficking of illegal drugs, emphasizing that the UN and ECOWAS had zero-tolerance policies regarding sexual exploitation and abuse (SEA).

He declared, “The Nigerian government and the Armed Forces of Nigeria will not put up with the breaking of these laws and regulations.”

Pre-deployment training was successfully completed, according to Adedoja, who praised the Chief of Army Staff for his strategic direction and unwavering support to the center.
