Federal Government Reinforces Commitment to Combat Ecological Challenges with Koton Karfe Flood Control Project

The Federal Government has reiterated its unwavering commitment to addressing the root causes of ecological challenges across Nigeria to safeguard lives and properties. This affirmation came during the commissioning of the Koton Karfe Flood Control Project in Kogi State by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Sen. George Akume, CON. The event underscored the government’s dedication to the welfare of Nigerians through proactive measures aimed at mitigating flood disasters and other related ecological problems.

Sen. Akume, represented by Mr. Simon Tyungu, Director, SGF Main Office, emphasized the government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, championed by Mr. President, which focuses on implementing strategic interventions to prevent the recurrence of devastating floods like those experienced in 2022. The floods had caused significant human suffering and economic disruption, particularly affecting Koton Karfe and surrounding areas.

Sen. Akume stated:

“The 2022 floods, which ravaged various parts of the country, including Koton Karfe, resulted in untold human suffering and economic disruption. The repercussions of this disaster were felt far and wide, affecting not only the residents of this community but also disrupting vital routes that connect different regions of our country. It was in the light of these pressing realities that the Federal Government, through N-HYPPADEC, took decisive action to address the root causes of flooding and mitigate its impact here in Kogi and other states where the Commission operates. The construction of the Koton Karfe Flood Control Project stands as a testament to Mr. President’s resolve to ameliorate the sufferings of the people it is meant to serve.”

The Secretary commended the National Hydro-Electric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (N-HYPPADEC) for the prompt execution of the project and urged the Commission to extend similar efforts to other flood-prone communities across the country. He also called on the host community to actively participate in maintaining the infrastructure, ensuring its effectiveness and longevity.

The Executive Governor of Kogi State, Ahmed Usman Ododo, represented by Deputy Governor Salifu Joel Oyibo, expressed gratitude for the Federal Government’s intervention projects. He acknowledged that the Koton Karfe Flood Control Project has significantly alleviated the recurrent flooding issues during rainy seasons, bringing relief to the people of Kogi State. The Governor also recognized Federal Government efforts in addressing ecological challenges in other parts of the state, including Lokoja, Ankpa, and Okene.

In his remarks, the Managing Director of N-HYPPADEC, Abubakar Sadiq Yelwa, highlighted the Commission’s comprehensive flood control mechanism. He assured that the Koton Karfe project addresses the root causes of the perennial flooding and would effectively prevent future occurrences in the affected community.

The Federal Government’s strategic interventions and the successful execution of the Koton Karfe Flood Control Project mark a significant step towards resolving ecological challenges and ensuring the safety and well-being of communities across Nigeria.
