In response to the devastating flood that has ravaged Maiduguri, Borno State, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to swiftly provide relief to those affected. The flood, which has been described as the most severe in decades, has displaced thousands of residents and impacted critical infrastructure, including the Maiduguri Post Office and the Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.
In a statement released on Tuesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu expressed his deep concern for the situation. He extended his heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Borno State, particularly to families who have lost their livelihoods due to the flooding, which was caused by the overflow of the Alau Dam.
The President emphasized the urgency of evacuating residents from affected areas and assured Governor Babagana Umara Zulum that the federal government would fully support the state in addressing the immediate humanitarian crisis.
“President Bola Tinubu expresses deep concern about the flooding in parts of Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State. This unprecedented flood has displaced thousands and disrupted essential facilities such as the Maiduguri Post Office and Teaching Hospital,” the statement read.
President Tinubu also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to mobilizing federal resources to aid in the recovery efforts. While damage assessments are ongoing, the President remains dedicated to ensuring that the needs of the displaced and affected residents are met.
NEMA has been instructed to expedite the relief process, providing essential supplies and assistance to the victims of the flood as the federal government works closely with state authorities to navigate the aftermath of this disaster.
