Emem Thomas and the Dragon Squad: Nigeria’s Trailblazing Plus-Size Female Bouncers

In southern Nigeria, Emem Thomas has turned personal adversity into a groundbreaking movement with her security team, Dragon Squad Limited. Founded in 2018, the Dragon Squad is an all-female, plus-size security team that defies stereotypes and champions body positivity in a traditionally male-dominated industry.

Thomas’s journey is one of resilience and empowerment. Growing up, she faced derisive comments about her body, which led her to abandon dreams like participating in a local beauty pageant. However, she discovered a niche where her plus-size physique was not only accepted but celebrated. Inspired by the powerful symbolism of dragons—creatures known for their strength and protection—Thomas established a team that embraces plus-size women and their unique qualities.

Dragon Squad Limited, with its 43 members, has made its mark by providing security at over 2,000 events, including house parties, political rallies, and nightclubs. This female-only team is equipped with essential security tools such as walkie-talkies, boots, dark glasses, and pepper spray, all while navigating the additional challenge of combating gender and body image biases.

For many members, like 23-year-old Peace Vigorous, joining the Dragon Squad has been an eye-opening experience. “People expect us to be in the kitchen or focusing on makeup,” Vigorous notes. “But joining this squad has really enlightened me.” The team not only addresses the physical demands of their job but also prepares for potential risks, including harassment and gender discrimination.

On any given day, Thomas leads her team through rigorous fitness sessions, underscoring the importance of strength and confidence. This commitment to fitness and professionalism highlights their determination to excel in their roles despite societal prejudices.

The Dragon Squad Limited is more than just a security team; it represents a powerful statement about breaking barriers and embracing diversity. By creating a space where plus-size women can thrive, Thomas and her squad are reshaping perceptions and demonstrating that competence and strength are not defined by body size.

Through their work, the Dragon Squad challenges traditional gender roles and proves that women of all shapes and sizes can succeed in roles where they have historically been underrepresented. Their story is a beacon of hope and an inspiring example of how self-acceptance and determination can lead to groundbreaking achievements.
