Nigeria, Benin Lose AFCON 2027 Joint Bid

Nigeria’s expectations of together facilitating the African Cup of Countries with Benin Republic in 2027 were run on Wednesday after the Confederation of Africa Football’s Leader Panel casted a ballot for a co-bid from Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, Sports Additional reports.

The occasion occurred at the Cairo Marriott Lodging in Zamalek, Cairo.

The joint East African bid for the 2027 version of the AFCON returns Africa’s football masterpiece to the locale interestingly beginning around 1976, when the competition was facilitated by Ethiopia.

The co-bid from Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda also outclassed proposals from Botswana, Egypt and Senegal, while Algeria, who were also candidates, withdrew on Tuesday.

Kenya was awarded the hosting rights in 1996 but was stripped because of poor preparations, with South Africa getting the nod to host the continent instead.

They only recently had a long FIFA ban for government interference in the running of their football federation lifted.

Nigeria had put forward the MKO Abiola Stadium, Abuja; Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, Port Harcourt; Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo; Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos; Ahmadu Bello Stadium, Kaduna; Stephen

Keshi Arena, Asaba; Samuel Ogbemudia Arena, Benin City and the Sani Abacha Arena, Kano as scenes to have matches at the competition, while in the Republic of Benin, the Stade Mathieu Kerekou in Cotonou and the Stade Charles de Gaulle in Porto Novo were recorded.

Nigeria facilitated and won the twelfth release of the AFCON in 1980 and afterward co-facilitated the 22nd version with Ghana in 2000 — losing in the last to Cameroon.

In the mean time, Morocco was granted the facilitating privileges of the 2025 AFCON finals on Wednesday, supplanting Guinea, who were deprived of the freedoms last year.

Morocco won of course after Algeria, Zambia and a joint bid from Benin and Nigeria all pulled out before the vote of the CAF’s leader council in Cairo on Wednesday.

The North African nation was an out of control #1 and will see the choice as a lift to their expectations of co-facilitating the 2030 World Cup with Portugal and Spain.

It is the second time that Morocco will have Africa’s most famous game, very nearly forty years after the past time in 1988.
