Kashifu Halilu Leads the Charge: Nigeria’s Plan to Achieve 70% Digital Literacy by 2027

The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has launched a new initiative called ‘Digital Literacy for All’ to promote digital education in Nigeria. Led by the Director General, Kashifu Halilu, this initiative aims to narrow the digital gap in the country and ensure that every Nigerian has access to digital literacy.

The initiative is designed to provide individuals with the necessary tools to access and utilize online resources for education, employment, and government services in a secure and efficient manner. Participants will learn how to protect themselves from cyber threats and misinformation, as well as how to communicate and collaborate effectively using digital tools. The program also aims to equip individuals with the skills required for in-demand jobs.

One of the main factors contributing to the digital gap in Nigeria is the lack of internet access. A report by Groupe Special Mobile Association revealed that about 71% of Nigerians do not have regular access to mobile internet, leading to disparities in access to information, services, and opportunities.

To address this issue, the Nigerian government has partnered with the World Bank to bridge the digital gap. NITDA’s ‘Digital Literacy for All’ initiative is aligned with this goal, aiming to achieve a 70% digital literacy level in the country by 2027. This will not only help bridge the digital divide but also contribute to the overall development and progress of the nation.

According to the Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria, over N15 trillion is estimated to be required to bridge Nigeria’s digital infrastructure gap. In light of this, NITDA’s initiative is a crucial step toward enhancing connectivity nationwide. Providing individuals with the necessary skills to access the digital world will ensure that no one is left behind in our rapidly evolving digital landscape.
