The Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC) has announced the date for local government elections in Anambra State, marking a significant step in the administration of Governor Prof. Chukwuma Soludo. After two years in office, Governor Soludo has moved forward with plans to hold these elections, as revealed in a press statement issued by ANSIEC on Monday.
Governor Soludo had previously inaugurated the commission members, urging them to ensure the elections were conducted with transparency and credibility. According to the statement signed by ANSIEC Chairman Genevieve C. Osakwe, the elections are scheduled for September 28, 2024.
The statement read: “The Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission wishes to inform all registered political parties and the general public that local government elections in the state will be held on Saturday, September 28, 2024. Election Timetable/Schedule of Activities and Other Details can be collected from the Headquarters of the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission, Awka, from Wednesday, August 14, 2024.”
This announcement follows years of advocacy by civil society groups, politicians, and journalists in Anambra, who have urged Governor Soludo to fulfill his commitment to conducting local government elections.
